Positions for intermediate staff at the University of Bern are, in principle, temporary. Young scientists are employed as doctoral students, teaching and research assistants, assistant physicians, senior teaching and research assistants, senior physicians or assistant professors in so-called qualification functions (see frequently asked questions about career topics).

An appointment is based on a contract and a job description. All employees of the University of Bern are entitled to an annual appraisal interview. This enables the parties concerned to assess performance and behavior, cooperation and the work situation as well as their career path and development. The Personnel department provides information and services regarding these topics in Uni-intern.

Doctoral students are governed by a doctorate agreement.
