Welcome to the University of Bern!
Are you new to the University of Bern or are you currently in the middle of an application or appointment procedure? Do you want to know what awaits you when you move to Switzerland and what you need to do?
We want to simplify this phase of a new start for our researchers and their families and through the Welcome Center, we provide an advisory service concerning "everyday questions" about their new life in Bern. We provide personalized, individual and prompt information and advice.
The Welcome Center's website has a compass function. We briefly address the most urgent matters then refer the people concerned to the relevant services and experts. Our information is as up-to-date as possible. Unfortunately, we cannot always follow up on the most recent developments (i.e. new prices, new regulations etc.)
Our service is open to
- Professors
- Post-doctoral students
- Doctoral students
- Guest researchers
The Welcome Center deals with questions relating to settling in Bern, including living in Bern, medical insurance, child care, schools and learning German. By organizing welcome events and intercultural workshops, the Welcome Center helps new arrivals to settle in Bern.
However, the recruiting institutes and the Human Resources Office take care of organizational questions concerning an appointment (work permit, work contract, salary).
Getting in contact early
We are looking forward to hearing from you. Write to us or make a consultation appointment on site. We are also happy to send you an overview for the periods before and after moving to Bern. Our tip: Leave plenty of time to plan your move. We recommend that you contact the Welcome Center three months before your first day at work.
Workshops, courses, events
The Welcome Center is organizing several "welcome" receptions as well as intercultural workshops.
