Required Contribution to AHV
All students with civil place of residence in Switzerland are obliged to contribute to the Federal Old Age and Survivors' Insurance (AHV) from January 1 of the year in which they complete their 20th year. People at work are obliged to contribute once they have completed their 17th year. The University of Bern transmits data of all students obliged to contribute (without MAS, DAS and CAS students) once a year to the AHV Compensation Office of the Canton of Bern which then sends the bills. The dues will be charged retroactively. You will thus receive the first invoice retroactively for the previous year when you reach the age of 22.
Students can have contributions they pay to the AHV as part of a job deducted from the minimum premium and pay just the difference.
Please note that any missing years of contribution will lead to a reduction in your pension.
