Prospective students Information for refugees

Kompass Community

Are you a (former) student at the University of Bern and would you like to accompany refugee students participating in the Compass UniBE program through the preparation year? Would you like to meet new people and exchange ideas?

Kompass Community is intended to be a place to exchange ideas, make new contacts, broaden your horizons, create shared experiences, but also simply have fun. With your experience as a student at the University of Bern, you can assist Compass participants with questions about everyday university life and share your tips and tricks about studying.

In Kompass Community, you will take part  together with Compass participants in 4 - 5 events over the course of a year. The type of event depends on your wishes. Depending on your interests, it could be a short hike up the Gurten, a joint museum night, a networking meeting or a language exchange.

You choose whether you want to participate in the organization of the events as part of the core group or whether you want to take part in the 4 - 5 events as a friend without any further obligations. If you have any other ideas about what Kompass Community could look like, feel free to get in touch!

The joint kick-off event took place in October. In addition, the core group organized a games evening with a potluck in November.

What awaits you

  • Valuable experiences in intercultural exchange and interesting encounters
  • Insights into difficulties and challenges that refugee students face in Switzerland
  • Broadening your knowledge on topics related to refugees, integration and education
  • Experience in event organization (Kompass Community core group)
  • A confirmation of your voluntary commitment

What we expect from you

  • Ideally commitment for one year
  • Interest in intercultural exchange
  • Ideally already advanced studies (at least 1-2 years of study experience)
  • Time for participation in (and organization of) the events
  • Participation in all events (= prerequisite for confirmation of voluntary commitment)
  • Encounter at eye level

You can have your voluntary commitment at Kompass Community recognized with a certificate of participation at the end of the project year. If you wish, you can also have your commitment as a volunteer documented in your Diploma Supplement. To do this, you should have taken part in all Kompass Community events.
