How and for what can I use ILIAS?
ILIAS has various purposes. Primarily, the system serves as a central learning management system on which course contents for seminars and lectures at the University of Bern can be provided. This means that students can access the materials for their classes anytime and anywhere.
ILIAS for teaching staff and admins
Using ILIAS in teaching
Request an ILIAS course
If you want to utilize an ILIAS course, you need to be the course administrator of that ILIAS course. Depending on the circumstances, a new ILIAS course can be requested as follows:
Case 1: The course is listed in the course directory (KSL).
- Request the ILIAS course through KSL when setting up the course:
Manual How to create an ILIAS course
Case 2: The course is not listed in the course directory.
- Request an iTools workspace (Portal Point):

Didactic scenarios
ILIAS has a complex permissions system that allows for a wide range of application scenarios. In most cases, there is more than one purpose for each ILIAS object. You can find various application scenarios in our ILIAS support area.
ILIAS for surveys, working groups and more
ILIAS is also suitable for collaboration, and the iTools allow individual tools from ILIAS to be used independently of a course (e.g., working groups and public surveys).
ILIAS for students
Please note that, as a matter of principle, no personal data (e.g., address lists, lists of candidates for repetition examinations, or lists of examination results) may be published via ILIAS.
In general, personal data may only be disclosed if the responsible authority is legally obligated or authorized to do so to fulfill its task, if the person concerned has expressly consented, or if it is in their interest. Furthermore, the principle of proportionality (that only as much data/information as necessary and as little as possible is processed and disclosed) and the purpose limitation principle (personal data may not be processed for a purpose that is incompatible in good faith with the purpose for which it was initially obtained or disclosed to the authority) must be observed when processing personal data.
