Video in higher education

Multimedia and Video production

Teaching, research and science communication can benefit enormously from the targeted use of videos and animations. If you would like to produce videos yourself, we will be happy to advise you with our know-how (free of charge). If you would like to have professional products created, we can take care of the entire production for you (subject to a charge).

Production: Have professional videos created (for a fee)

If you would like to have professional videos created, we can take care of the entire production or individual production steps (e.g. storyboarding, animation or post-production) for you. It is essential that the production is tailored to the respective purpose and type of publication. Accordingly, we produce videos in various formats (educational and explanatory videos, interviews, videos for information campaigns, documentation of experiments or project and research results, animations, etc.) for different scenarios and target groups and discuss the publication options with you. The recordings are made on your premises, in the field or in the video studio.

Advice: For DIY productions (free of charge)

If you would like to produce a video yourself, we will be happy to advise you with our know-how. Extensive information material is available for the production and publication of teaching/learning videos and for the use of videos in teaching: www.lehre.unibe.ch/video

Hardware for video and audio recordings can be borrowed from Podcast Support. Please refer to the following list (link) for information on available loan materials.

Courses/workshops: For DIY productions (free of charge)

We regularly offer courses on video production and the use of videos in teaching (click here for the current range of courses). On request, we can run shorter training courses or workshops for groups on video production and use according to your wishes.

Production

All organizational units of the University of Bern can commission video productions. The production is always subject to a fee and the amount of the costs depends on the scope of the project - or the amount of work involved in the production. After an initial consultation on the realization of the project, we prepare an offer based on our rates (750 CHF/day at a rate of 85 CHF/hour).

A request should be made as early as possible because our capacities are limited. Good planning and preparation also pave the way for efficient and high-quality video production.

Courses & Consultations

The courses, workshops and consultations for your own productions are free of charge for all employees of the University of Bern. In some cases, a current teaching assignment is required for the courses.

Members of the University of Bern can commission videos for various scenarios and in different formats:

  • Educational and explanatory videos
  • Interviews and statements
  • Videos for information campaigns
  • Documentation of project and research results
  • Documentation of experiments
  • Impressions of events
  • Image films
  • Interactive videos
  • and much more.

When implementing the various formats, we take into account the target group, the publication platform and the application scenario. Together with you, we make a sensible choice, plan the implementation, formulate the key messages and create a storyboard.

Educational and explanatory video #1

Assignment: flashMOOCs

The presentation recorded in the video studio alternates with full-screen animations. This makes the video varied and appealing.

Educational and explanatory video #2

Universität Bern, Vorschaubild zum Video «LernToolKit – Lernstrategien situativ einsetzen»

Assignment: LernToolKit

For the presentation recorded in the video studio, the camera angle and background were chosen so that clear graphics, illustrations and short texts (keywords, outline, etc.) can be shown next to the person.

Animation for social media

Assignment: AHA videos

In 1:1 format and understandable even without sound, these explanatory videos are optimized for publication on social media channels. The relevant content is conveyed in an entertaining but well-founded and target group-oriented way.

Animation for information campaign

Assignment: Information videos on risk management

The “Paper Cut Out” animation style is simple, but can be used very broadly and creatively with original drawings. In this example, a pinch of humor spices up the drawing style and brings a zest to the central but rather dry topic of risk management.

Animation: Video tutorial

Mission: Making the most of podcasts

The animated video explains the central content of an empirical study in a clear and appealing way. The visual language and the relatively fast pace are adapted to the target group (students).

3D animations

Assignment: flashMOOCs

Animations in 3D enable the vivid representation of objects, machines or buildings. 3D animations are particularly suitable for highlighting details or depicting complex procedures or processes.

Cut-out Animation Technique

Assignment: Education for Sustainable Development

In this technique, cut-out objects made of paper (usually hand drawings) are placed on a horizontal surface and moved by hand. A camera fixed directly above films the entire process. Scene changes are typically marked by wiping away all the objects.

High-Quality Close-Up Shots (e.g., in Research Projects)

Assignment: flashMOOCs

Special lenses for macro photography and attachments for microscopes make it possible to take detailed images of small objects. This allows, for example, insects and plant parts to be depicted in high-quality, detailed images with a high standard of image quality and composition.

Video Interview

Assignment: Video Testimonials "Let's Talk"

Video interviews are suitable for capturing statements from experts. Depending on the circumstances, the conversations can be pre-planned or conducted efficiently without extensive preparation.

Interactive Videos

Assignment: flashMOOCs

In all formats, it's fundamentally possible to integrate interactive elements (e.g., quizzes, additional information, or chapter selections) into the video. This allows viewers to engage more deeply with the content.
