Child care and school
Regular schooling lasts 11 years in the canton of Bern: 2 years of kindergarten, 6 years of primary school and 3 years of secondary school level I. Young people can then pursue their education in secondary level II through schools such as the "Gymnasium" or schools offering vocational training.
Most children attend a public school. Public schools are religiously neutral and the teaching is free. The local school authorities assign children to a school near their place of residence. For children who don't speak German, special intensive "German as a second language courses" are available.
Places for younger children in daycare centers or other "extra-family care" can, however, be expensive. These childcare facilities are in great demand and waiting periods are not uncommon.
